I want change! I want my life to change! I want change!

I just don’t want to change anything in my life for it. I just don’t want to have to step out of my comfort zone. I just don’t want to have to try something new, make a sacrifice or change my daily routine.

But I want my life to change

And I have been hearing a fair bit of this recently. The very nature of change requires change. Otherwise what exactly are we asking for. If we ask for change in our lives because where we are is not serving us. Then that means we must be willing to flow with the tides of change. A new life, a new whatever you are looking for, cannot simply come into your life and wait patiently in the corner whilst you get on with doing other things that are far more important.

So say there are issues at work that are upsetting you. You keep saying this is not your dream job, this is not what you want to be doing with your life. You have a rough idea what you would like to be doing, you are not sure how to make that happen or even if it can help you pay the bills and live. However its what you dream of doing every time you go into work or are on your way home. So someone suggests you do a course, find a new job, take a break and suddenly all walls of resistance comes up. Now there are reasons why: reasons like you won’t be able to take a cut in pay, reasons why you actually love your job, you will miss your route to work, you will miss your colleagues, you need to be sensible, you don’t really want to do something different. And on. And yet when asked first, you said you wanted change.

So if we are asking for change-we need to be clear what change do we want. And above all how much do we want it? How much? For if it is a passing phase then it is not something that can be honoured authentically.

Change requires we change. It requires letting go of the old to make way for the new. It requires times in our lives when we may have to choose between an old way and a new way. Choose between something that would give us instant pleasure and something that may well benefit us in the long term. It requires we have a mindfulness in every moment about the change we seek. So when faced with a decision we ask does this take me closer to that I desire or further away. Which direction you walk in is dependant on how much you want that change.

And no- no one ever said it would be easy. And perhaps neither does it serve us to be. For we have to want it- we have to yearn for it and above all we need to put in the work for it. We all know if you want to drop a dress size, lose those love handles then it wont happen as long as the rich diet and the lack of exercise continues. That new physique will not just knock on your door and sit next to you on the couch waiting to be put on. It requires work, sacrifice at times and a real yearning. In the end the question shall be: do I want this and how much. Because the truth is it is your decision to drop a dress size, lose love handles, change careers, open to relationships, move country.

It is YOUR decision. If you want it then what are you prepared to do for that change. We need to ask for the help to get us there but when that help arrives to not utilise it is a symptom of resistance and fear. And those 2 are our biggest obstacles to change.
